How do I apply/reapply for Student Finance?

You must fill in:

  • PN1 Form (new applicants) or
  • a PR1 Form (returning applicants) or
  • PTG1 Form (part time applicants)

These forms can be completed online or downloaded from the Student Finance Wales website, or an application pack can be requested by calling 0845 602 8845 (Mon-Fri 8am - 8pm, and Saturday 9am - 1pm).

Your application is then assessed by your Local Authority. If you have a query about your application once you have submitted it, contact your Local Authority direct. There is a 'Find your Local Authority' tool available on the Student Finance Wales website.

When should I apply for Student Finance?

You should apply for student finance as soon as possible, so you are made aware early of what you are entitled to.

You do not need to wait until you have a confirmed place on a course before applying, just quote the course you think you are most likely to attend. If your course changes after you have applied, inform your Local Authority/Student Finance Wales as soon as possible.

If you decide that you want financial help after your course starts, you can apply for this help up to 9 months after the first day of the academic year of your course, however you may need to pay your tuition fees whilst you apply for funding.

How long will it take to process my application?

If your application form and supporting evidence is all in order, your application form should be processed within 6 weeks of submission. If there is any information missing your Local Authority will contact you.

What is my course title?

This is the exact title of the course you will be studying.

What is the year of course?

This is the year of the course that you are applying for, e.g. if you have successfully passed your 1st Year, you will need to tick the "Second Year" box (as this is the year of study that you are applying for).

What figure do I use for my income details?

You need to provide the gross amount earned, i.e. before any deductions like tax.

Some of my details have changed since I started my course, what should I do?

If some of your details, such as name, address or course etc. have changed since you applied for your support you can change these details either via your online account or by completing a CO1 form and returning this to your Local Authority. Go to Forms and guides 2011/12 and complete the CO1 form.

What is my Student Support Number?

Your Student Support Number is on all correspondence received from your Local Authority, Student Finance Wales and / or the Student Loans Company.

My Student Loan/Grant has not been paid into my bank account, what should I do?

You should ring Student Finance Wales on 0845 602 8845 in the first instance.

How are tuition fee loans paid?

The tuition fee loan is paid directly to the University or college on your behalf.

How do I find out more / apply for the Disabled Students Allowance?

When you apply for student support, you will need to indicate on the form that you wish to receive a DSA application form. You will then be sent the appropriate form by Student Finance Wales. You might also wish to discuss this further with an Adviser at the institution where you have chosen to study.

What funding is available for full time UHOVI courses?

How and when are Student Loans and Assembly Learning/Higher Education Grants paid?

All full-time student Maintenance Loans and Grants are paid in 3 installments during the academic year by the Student Loans Company into the bank accounted nominated by you during the application process. Payments are made at the beginning of each term and are paid by BACS. As long as you have applied in time for financial support, the first installment is scheduled to be paid approximately 4-5 working days after you have enrolled. However, we advise all students to be financially prepared for a longer delay, just in case there is a problem.

Foundation Degree in Learning Support starts February 2012 at The College Ystrad Mynach.
