Bite-sized Learning

These short courses are the perfect introduction to studying with UHOVI. Courses are available in a variety of subjects with opportunities to move on to further study if desired. Delivery takes place in community venues across the Valleys region.

Who can do these courses?

Our courses are open to everyone, and you don't usually need any previous experience or qualifications to enrol. Many of our students haven't studied, or been on a course for a long time.

How old do I need to be to study a Bite-sized course?

Normally you would need to be 18 or over to study with us at level 4 or above.

How do I join a course?

You can apply online from the relevant course page or download a copy of the paper application form and send it to UHOVI, Crownford House, Swan Street, Merthyr Tydfil, CF47 8EU. Alternatively, call 0800 1223 220/01443 654786, or email us at uhovienquiries@southwales.ac.uk.

If you happen to miss the first session, please call us as it may still be possible for you to join the course. If not, don't worry – courses begin at other times of the year.

Are there assessments?

All of our courses are 'accredited', this means that to successfully complete the course and be awarded the Higher Education (HE) credits you will be required to undertake – and pass – some type of formal assessment. This could range from a short in-class test, coursework/portfolio or a short presentation. Please don't let the assessment put you off attending, rest assured that you will be encouraged and guided by our friendly, supportive staff during your studies. All assessments will take place during your course, at your place of study.

What is the cost?

All courses are charged at £12.60 per credit for the academic year 2015/6. This means a Bite-sized 10 credit course will cost £126 and a 20 credit course costs £252. There is however a UHOVI Bursary Scheme which has been designed to help with the cost of studying these short courses. You must meet all the terms and conditions of the Scheme and apply before you enrol on the course.

What opportunities are there once I've completed a course?

Bite-sized courses are available in a variety of subjects with clear progression routes for those who wish to move on to a Foundation Degree or other professional training programme.

Changes to your course

All courses are subject to minimum student numbers. Should it be necessary to postpone, cancel or make changes to a course, we will endeavour to notify applicants at least seven days prior to the start date of the course.
