New Year, new opportunities with UHOVI

03 January 2012

UHOVI (Universities Heads of the Valleys Institute) is launching a new programme of bite-sized courses starting at various times from January to April 2012. These short courses are suitable for anyone interested in trying something new, improving their career prospects, or looking for a route into higher education.

Delivered in local venues by supportive tutors, courses are available in a range of subjects including: Career Planning, Creative Writing, Counselling, Personal Finance, Forensic Computing, Healthy Lifestyles, History, Psychology, Safeguarding Children, Renewable Energy and Web Design.

Students don’t need qualifications for many courses as consideration is given to experience and aptitude. There are no formal exams plus free places are available through the UHOVI Bursary Scheme (conditions apply).

Andrew Rogers, Deputy Director for UHOVI said: “UHOVI is committed to helping individuals to develop, so we place great value on offering a friendly and supportive learning environment. Our bite-sized courses offer an ideal opportunity to ‘have a go’ at higher level study as we think everyone can achieve, they just may not believe it yet.”

Natalie Ramus from Ebbw Vale has studied several bite-sized courses and is now on track to complete her certificate in Higher Education, which she hopes will enable her to gain a place on a Degree course. Natalie says: “I was really nervous when I enrolled on my first bite-sized course in psychology but the tutors were really supportive and it fitted in with my family life as I study in Tredegar.” When asked what she would say to others thinking about taking a course, Natalie answered: “If there is a seed of possibility, go for it. You have nothing to lose and a mountain to gain and I can honestly say it is a life changing experience. I’ve met new people, learned new things and I now have more opportunities than I ever thought possible.”

In addition to this programme of short courses available to local residents, UHOVI also offers training for businesses, professional development modules and formal qualifications such as HNDs and Foundation Degrees.

The full range of courses is featured on the UHOVI website or anyone interested can call 0800 1223 220 or email enquiries@uhovi.ac.uk
