Locals in Merthyr Tydfil given the chance to get social media savvy

10 February 2012

Businesses and community groups in Merthyr Tydfil are being given the opportunity to learn more about how they could benefit from social media by attending a free event in the local area.

Workshops are being held at the Orbit Centre on 22 February to demonstrate how social media can be an effective tool for engaging with audiences, customers and target groups. The workshops are being provided by a465.com, a website that provides information on education and training infrastructure changes in Merthyr Tydfil and will feature Cardiff-based social media specialists, Native HQ.
Two separate workshops will be held at the Orbit Centre – one for businesses and another for communities and groups - with each being adapted to best suit the needs of the audience. The workshops are free of charge and those interested in attending should register a place at the event on www.a465.com.
Tom Beardshaw, director at Native HQ, said: “Social media is becoming increasingly prominent and it has many benefits to businesses and community groups. We want to show people who haven’t tried sites like Facebook or Twitter or aren’t sure how to use them to help a business or group that they can be an extremely powerful tool for spreading your messages.
“The aim of these workshops is to dispel any negative myths that people may have over using social media and encourage people to share more information in the area. Many people feel intimidated by social media, but hopefully we can help people to get online and reap the benefits.”
The business workshop will focus on how sites like Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin can help widen the customer-base of a company. While the community groups will look at how to better spread messages to members and encourage participation.
A465.com is a website to keep people in the heads of the Valleys up-to-date with changes in education that are coming to the area. It signposts what changes are happening in each local authority and includes information on how schools and employers can work together to make the most out of tomorrow’s workforce.
The Merthyr Learning Quarter will open in September in 2013 and shall widen post-16 options for young people in the area.
A representative fromUHOVI will be at this event to promote local learning.
Register a free place on either the business or community group workshop by visiting http://www.a465.com/social-media/.
