Funding available for Valleys business degree
11 August 2011
The University of Wales, Newport has launched a new course as part of the Universities Heads of the Valleys Institute (UHOVI). Students in private sector employment who live and/or work in West Wales and the Valleys, may be entitled to a fully or partly-funded place on the course – subject to conditions.
The Foundation Degree in Business Practice will help people employed within the voluntary or private sectors to enhance their skills and prospects in business. The course will cover a wide range of elements for effective management including business analysis, organisational behaviour, financial information management and the digital economy.
The project, backed by the EU’s Convergence European Social Fund through the Welsh Government, will help raise employee confidence, increase productivity, and the overall success of their employer organisation.
The Foundation Degree is a two year, part time course comprising one afternoon and one evening per week. By releasing employees to study for just one afternoon a week, local organisations will be able to develop their staff in ways which will directly benefit their work. It is hoped that the project will attract companies who wish to address difficulties they may be experiencing in the areas of up-skilling staff.
Commenting on the launch of the course: Kirsten Merrill-Glover, Head of Community Learning said: “This is an exciting new addition to the wide range of UHOVI courses available via the University of Wales, Newport’s Centre for Community and Lifelong Learning. Research shows that only 1 in 5 managers are qualified; with 63% having no formal training whatsoever. By studying the theory behind the practice students improve their effectiveness and reap rewards for their employer.”
“Lots of people within the Heads of the Valleys region are very keen to develop their business skills. With this part time course taught at the Innovation Centre in Ebbw Vale, they can more easily fit their study around work and family commitments.”
Prospective students and their employers can find out more information at an open evening at The Innovation Centre, Ebbw Vale on 1 September 2011, 5-7pm. To book, contact the Centre for Lifelong Learning on (01495) 722973.
