Free taster courses at Blackwood Miners' Institute open day
Blackwood Miners' Institute is celebrating 20 successful years of operating as a professional theatre with a weeklong series of events.
A special open day will take place on Wednesday 15th February 2012 with creative activities and performances plus FREE arts, crafts, drama, dance and writing workshops for the whole family to enjoy. The full schedule of events is available at
www.blackwoodminersinstitute.com.
Workshops delivered by Newport University in partnership with UHOVI include:
Writing in the Valleys 10.00am – 12.00pm A two hour creative writing session which will focus on writing fiction within the setting and culture of the Welsh Valleys, with a focus on our knowledge and memories of buildings such as the ‘Stute. A short piece of writing will be produced within the session, followed by discussions about what ‘form’ of writing the piece could be developed into.
Forgotten Landscapes 2.00 – 4.00pm All signposts point to Blackwood: a light-hearted session looking at the journey between people, places and events that finishes in Blackwood.
The Buildings Around Us – 4.30 – 6.00pm Have you ever wondered why a window is pointed or a building has grand columns stuck on its front? Why one chapel features simple arched windows while another is covered in twiddly decoration? In this one and a half hour workshop we'll explore some of the roots of architectural style, from ancient Greece to medieval France - using the facade of the Blackwood Miners’ Institute as our inspiration and starting point. Bring a photo of a favourite local building with you if you'd like to discuss its origins in architectural history.
All welcome! To book a place on any of the courses please call the BOX OFFICE on 01495 227206 or email bmi@caerphilly.gov.uk
